Why I built CurlPetal

Christine Perry, founder of CurlPetal

I'm Christine, and wash day in my house is a whole thing because I have two daughters with curly hair, so we are doing this three times over every single week.

My stylist Sherrell was the one who changed how I thought about it. I had just colored my hair and she told me steam treatments would prevent breakage and help my hair stay healthy through the process, so I went and bought the only steam tool on the market, the Pattern steamer. It works and I still have it.

But it lives in my bathroom and I like to make the most of family time, so I do my hair and my kids' hair in the living room, talking, playing games, all of us together. A tool that needs a counter and a cord, that does not double as a detangler, does not fit that life.

I held onto that idea for a year thinking a big brand would obviously get there, but the more I looked the more I noticed that curly hair care does not get the same innovation budget as everything else and nobody was coming.

I told Sherrell I was still waiting and she told me to stop waiting and build it myself.

So I did.

Turns out Sherrell was onto something with the warmth. When your hair is warm it just gives more, the knots loosen up and slide apart instead of fighting you. The problem is most hot tools run way too hot and leave curls dried out, which is exactly what you don't want. So I kept CurlPetal warm, not hot. Enough to make detangling easy, not enough to wreck your hair.

CurlPetal is the tool I wished existed, a patent-pending warm mist detangling brush designed for hair types 3A through 4C, cordless and palm-sized, built for real life not a bathroom sink.
